Life gets busy and sometimes getting to your doctor's appointment can be tough but don't make a habit of missing appointments. Missing appointments can give the insurance company the wrong impression. The insurance people may think, "If you are truly injured, why are your doctor's appointments not a priority?". You do not want them to think that. Also, doctors can get upset at repetitive no-show appointments.  Remember that your doctor is a witness to your injury and you want your witness to be cooperative with your insurance company paperwork and all other legal aspects of your insurance injury claim. Keep your doctor and therapy appointments.

Some people try to be tough around friends and family after they have been injured in a car accident. They do not want to be thought of as a wimp. Sometimes injuries from car accident do not show outward cuts, bruises or broken bones, yet the injured person still feels tremendous pain nonetheless. Often car accident injuries cause muscle tearing, inflammation, ligament rips, tendon swelling and spinal disc damage that is not visible just by looking at the skin. Even x-rays do not show most soft tissue damage. An MRI scan can show some of these injuries, but the doctor's examination will reveal patient mobility restrictions, pain to pressure over the injured area and other signs that helps the doctor come to a diagnosis. Do not be "tough" in front of your doctor, tell him or her how much the pain really is. Also, do not exaggerate your pain. Tell the honest truth. The insurance company needs to know how this accident has affected you. The insurance company may try to minimize you injuries but do not fall for that trick. Keep a diary of how the injuries have affected you from day to day. This will help you remember far into the future when it comes time to settle your claim with the insurance company.

You need to tell you health care provider a complete and detailed medical history of yourself.  It is important to reveal all medical history, especially of regions of your body that may have been injured prior to the car accident. Do not try to hide prior injuries from your doctor. This may come back to haunt you.  A prior injury does not mean your current car accident injury does not exist.  It means you need to determine what percent of your current medical diagnosis is the result of the recent accident and what percent of the injury is due to prior or pre-existing medical problems. Often this is what happens.... prior injuries fully resolve without residual effects to your body and you felt fine until the car accident caused a new injury to the same body part. In cases like this, the car accident is 100% the cause of your current medical condition. Let your medical provider know all the details of the car accident so that a mechanism of injury can be determined. In order for the car insurance company to accept your injury claim, you need to explain how the accident caused your  current injury. This is called the mechanism of injury. Tell your health care provider all the signs and symptoms of your injury related to the car accident. Sometimes symptoms related to the car accident do not appear immediately after the accident. Sometimes you do not feel the full effects/pain from the car accident injuries for days. This is common.
